"If Georgia wants to become a member of the European Union, media freedom must be ensured" | Carpenter on Nika Gvaramia

"We have repeatedly stated publicly and in our relations with members of the Georgian government that media independence is an absolute priority for us and not only for us, for the entire international world, including the European Union. So if Georgia wants to become a member of the European Union, media freedom must be ensured and promoted. Also, the rule of law should apply to all cases and to all people. This is a standard that we and the European Union emphasize and will continue to do in the future,"
This how U.S. Ambassador to the OSCE Michael Carpenter responds to questions about Nika Gvaramia's political imprisonment.
