Nino Lomjaria finished working as a public defender. Lomjaria stated at the summary press conference that one of the achievements of the Office of the Public Defender during its work is the role of the ombudsman in the development of the country.
"Today is the end of my 5-year term as a public defender. I think that today is a very important moment for the country. Our country has been given a unique opportunity to become a member of the European Union, to receive the status of a candidate member. I think that even today and in the coming months the most important issue for the country is Fulfillment of the 12 points that the European Union imposed on the country. I believe that one of the achievements of the Office of the Public Defender in this post is that the Office of the Public Defender plays a very important role in the development of the country, there was an unprecedented recognition from the international community and in the future on the path of European integration. The Office of the Public Defender will play a very important role, and the proof of this is the recognition of the Office of the Public Defender as an independent institution by the European Union institutions, and it is also important that the positioning and evaluations of the Public Defender are given great importance," says Lomjaria.
Lomjaria expresses hope that the Public Defender's Institute will maintain its independence.
"Today, it will probably be a very important issue who will be elected by the Parliament of Georgia for this post, because it will be a very important issue in the 12 recommendations. I know that it will receive a lot of attention, because from the position of the European Union, this is an issue that only requires the political will of the authorities to be expressed from the side, therefore I have great hope that this institution will maintain its independence and the candidate will be selected for which there will be maximum consensus among the political spectrum" - said Nino Lomjaria
According to Lomjaria, during her work, the Institute of the Public Defender established two political prosecutions, including the case of Nika Gvaramia, the CEO of "Mtavari Channel".
"I had to work until the last minute, because there were urgent and acute issues, and I think that these issues will naturally not lose their relevance in the future. One of the last decisions I signed is sad, because for the second time, during my 5-year history, the Public Defender has determined Political persecution. In this case, I mean the case of Nika Gvaramia. The first case was the case of the so-called cartographers, where we said that the political motivation exceeded the legal decision of this case, and one of the last decisions was that as a result of the study of the case, the public defender determined that Nika "There were political motives in Gvaramia's case, and these motives exceeded the legal ones," said Lomjaria.
