American toxicologist David Smith believes that heavy metals entered Mikheil Saakashvili's body during his stay in prison. As he stated in the Tbilisi City Court, during the remote connection, the third president was already showing symptoms of poisoning before being taken to the clinic.
Lawyer Shalva Khachapuridze asked him about the episodes of loss of consciousness that Mikheil Saakashvili had in Viva Med in May. According to Khachapuridze, the third president lost consciousness for the first time on May 5, and the clinic ordered blood tests to investigate the cause only 26 days later. The lawyer wondered how late this analysis was and how far the real picture could be established.
David Smith said that after 26 days, the study was too late, and besides, heavy metals in the body cannot be determined by blood analysis alone:
"It was taken late. Heavy metals in the bloodstream disappear very quickly, we sometimes use hair research to determine the presence of these metals," Smith said, and then noted that according to his data, Mikheil Saakashvili's brother was poisoned with metals in March:
"The first intoxication with heavy metals happened, I think, in March, before he was transported, and later these heavy metals damaged, as they spread throughout the body, various organs," said Smith.
When asked by the lawyer whether the poisoning happened in prison or not, Smith said:
"I have no other explanation than that he was given heavy metals, which caused severe injuries, including convulsions.
He already had symptoms when he was taken to a medical facility. I believe that his exposure to heavy metals did not occur in a medical facility, but occurred before that, in prison."
