Attacks by violent groups are encouraged by the government - DRI on disrupting Berdzenishvili's lecture

"Democracy Research Institute" reacts to the disruption of Levan Berdzenishvili's lecture by members of a violent group in Kvareli and claims that they are encouraged by the government.

DRI writes that in recent years journalists, civic activists and opposition MPs have often been victims of verbal and/or physical attacks by thugs encouraged by the ruling party. The organization notes that the authorities have encouraged violent groups to freely organize the violence committed on July 5 and 6, 2021.

"It is the duty of the state to protect and ensure freedom of speech. It is the duty of the state to give everyone the opportunity to express his opinion and to express his attitude toward various events in a free and safe environment and in a non-violent manner. During the attack in Kvareli, the inaction of law enforcement officers was obvious.[2] The law enforcement officers failed to provide Levan Berdzenishvili with freedom of movement and safe entrance into the building. The group of attackers consisted of several dozen people. In case of mobilization and/or proper action by a relatively large number of law enforcement officers, they would have been able to ensure the safe movement of Levan Berdzenishvili," the report reads.
