European Commissioner Johannes Hahn reminds the Georgian authorities once again that they are responsible for the protection of Mikheil Saakashvili's rights, as well as his health condition. Han made the statement regarding the third president during his speech in the European Parliament, where the debate is about the third president of Georgia:
The European Union is closely monitoring the health condition of the former president of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili. After his return to Georgia last September, he was convicted of abuse of office. Since May 2022, he has been in a civilian clinic, where he was transferred at the request of his family, and since then his deteriorating health has been a matter of our concern, and we have repeatedly raised this issue with the Georgian authorities. Most recently, on December 28, the EU delegation, together with the representatives of EU countries in Georgia, met with the Minister of Justice of Georgia and expressed concern about Mr. Saakashvili's deteriorating health. This was followed by a meeting of the EU ambassador in Georgia with the Minister of Justice. In all these meetings, we emphasized that it is the government's responsibility to provide proper medical care to Mr. Saakashvili. In addition, his right to an independent court must be protected and his personal data must also be protected. It is the obligation of the Georgian authorities to act accordingly if Mr. Saakashvili's health condition is critical. I think it is in everyone's interest that the Georgian authorities ensure that the examination is carried out by impartial international experts," says Hahn.
Later, he once again addressed the MEPs on behalf of the European Commission and said that they will continue to monitor Mikheil Saakashvili's case:
"I want to assure you that we will continue to monitor Saakashvili's case and condition and will make every effort to resolve this case. We also call on the ruling power of Georgia and the opposition forces to implement the 12 points contained in the agreement," said Johannes Hahn.
