The U.S. State Department awarded former Georgian Public Defender Nino Lomjaria and her team with the annual Global Human Rights Defender Award.
"Ms. Lomjaria served as Georgia's Public Defender from 2017 to 2022. Under her leadership, the Office of the Public Defender was widely considered the most independent democratic institution in Georgia. During her tenure, Nino and her team supported increased protection of people's rights, sometimes even under intense political pressure, they maintained their independence.
The Office of the Public Defender worked to fight discrimination, protect the rights of children, people with disabilities, prisoners, LGBTQ+ people, and religious minorities. Regardless of political affiliation, it sought to build a democratic state consistent with the Euro-Atlantic aspirations of its citizens," the State Department said in a statement.
