During the last 1 year we have taken all steps to get closer to the EU and fulfill our obligations – Garibashvili

Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili claims that after Georgia formally applied for European Union membership last year, efforts to achieve the goal have intensified. He says that the government has taken all steps to get closer to the European lifestyle and standards, institutional set up and legislation, and to fulfill its obligations. Garibashvili says that EU enlargement is a merit-based process, and this is encouraging. Today marks one year since the historic day when Georgia officially applied for the EU membership.

"On March 3, 2022, I had the distinct honor of signing the document that embodies the dream of many generations of Georgians, the centuries-old aspiration of our people. On that day, a new page of our history was turned; very soon, the recognition of Georgia's European perspective by the Council of the European Union brought us even closer to membership of the European family of free nations. This past year, we stepped up our efforts to achieve the goal that has defined our entire history and, naturally, the activity of our government; we have taken every step to get closer to the European lifestyle and standards, institutional mechanisms and legislation, to fulfill the commitments that we have undertaken. In this process, we always feel the support of our people, which is the strongest incentive for the daily activities of the government and our political team as a whole. We are grateful to our European friends, to our partner governments and to the people who support us in achieving this goal. EU enlargement is a merit-based process and that is what gives us the greatest hope. A European country with its history, its culture, its values, an organic part of the Western civilization and a creator of its great culture, Georgia undoubtedly deserves a fair recognition by its current day, massive reforms, pace of development and quality. I deeply believe that the historical process, which a year ago has become irreversible, will soon culminate in Georgia's full membership of the European Union" - Irakli Garibashvili writes.
