One of the shareholders of the Mtavari Channel, political prisoner Giorgi Rurua, has been left in custody - a decision was made by the Tbilisi City Court a few minutes ago. Giorgi Rurua was sentenced to 4 years in prison.
Recall that Giorgi Rurua was arrested on November 18, 2019. The investigation accused him of illegal purchase, storage, and carrying of firearms, but none of the evidence in the case confirmed the prosecution's version. Rurua's defense has repeatedly petitioned for his release over several months of litigation, although the court has not issued a decision in this regard.
The release of the political prisoners was conditioned by the March 8 agreement reached between the government and the opposition through the mediation of the facilitator ambassadors. Giorgi Rurua was detained for political motives, according to international partners who called on the Georgian authorities to release him and end his political persecution. Rurua's release was also part of the March 8 agreement, but the government did not fulfill that promise.
