The end of the regime and the liberation of Giorgi Rurua are very close - Nika Gvaramia

The end of the regime and the freedom of Giorgi Rurua are very close," - Nika Gvaramia, the General Director of the "Mtavari Channel". According to him, the only "crime" committed by Giorgi Rurua is the founding of the "Mtavari Channel" and the support to democracy.

He was sentenced to four years in prison for a non-existent crime. His only "crime" is the establishment of this channel and promotion of democracy in Georgia not only by investing in this channel, but also by supporting anti-government rallies. Such countries, or rather such regimes, cannot last long. I am sure that the end of the regime is approaching and that is why Giorgi's liberation is close. There is another solution for this regime to save face - it is pardoning. "Let's see if the" Georgian Dream "has enough brains or at least the instinct of self-preservation to use this last lever, - said Nika Gvaramia.

Recall that on July 30, Judge Valerian Bugianishvili sentenced Giorgi Rurua to 4 years in prison. Shortly after the verdict was announced Giorgi Rurua published a status on his Facebook page where he wrote that "the truth will always find its way".

The defense assesses the verdict as a political decision and plans to appeal it in the Court of Appeals.

Giorgi Rurua was arrested on November 18, 2019. The investigation accused him of illegal purchase, storage, and carrying of firearms, but none of the evidence in the case confirmed the prosecution's version. Rurua's defense has repeatedly petitioned for his release over several months of litigation, although the court has not issued a decision in this regard.

The release of the political prisoners was conditioned by the March 8 agreement reached between the government and the opposition through the mediation of the facilitator ambassadors. Giorgi Rurua was detained for political motives, according to international partners who called on the Georgian authorities to release him and end his political persecution. Rurua's release was also part of the March 8 agreement, but the government did not fulfill that promise.
