We are planning a protest rally, information about which we will provide to the public in the near future, we will do everything to end the illegal imprisonment of Nika Gvaramia as soon as possible - says the statement of Nika Gvaramia's Freedom Movement.
The representatives of the movement symbolically made the statement near the President's residence, on Atoneli Street, and spoke about the responsibility that Salome Zurabishvili shares with the government through her inaction.
According to the members of the movement, they are starting consultations with opposition political parties, non-governmental and international organizations in order to end Nika Gvaramia's illegal imprisonment:
"On 16 May it will be one year since Nika Gvaramia has been illegally imprisoned. By passing this sentence the authorities have actually separated us from the European future, sabotaged our membership to the European Union since the release of Nika Gvaramia today presents the 7th recommendation out of 12 .Nika Gvaramia's sentence is a confirmation of politicized l justice in the country, and we saw few days ago, that the USA imposed sanctions against 4 judges, which is a clear confirmation that we really do not have justice in the country. Unfortunately the President of Georgia did not pardon Nika Gvaramia before Easter, contrary to public expectations.
Salome Zurabishvili, by her failure to use this lever and her inaction, has in fact become an accomplice to the criminal acts of the government. The aforementioned decision prolongs Nika Gvaramia's illegal imprisonment and harms the European future of the country. In this context, we consider the cancellation of the visit of President Salome Zurabishvili scheduled for April 18th as a missed opportunity.
Our movement is entering a new stage of work by consulting with the nongovernmental sector, international organizations, diplomatic corps, and all opposition parties in order to put maximum pressure on decision makers through coordinated actions and force them to release Nika Gvaramia as soon as possible, which will restore the rule of law and bring us closer to the EU candidate status. We are also planning a protest demonstration, about which we will inform the public in the near future, we will do our best to put an end to the illegal detention of Nika Gvaramia as soon as possible," the Nika Gvaramia Freedom Movement said in a statement.
