"Doesn't recognise Georgia as a sovereign state" - People's Power attacks Kelly Degnan again

Published:

The People's Power movement, known for its anti-Western statements, is again attacking the US Ambassador Kelly Degnan and claiming that she does not recognise Georgia as a sovereign state.

Members of the parliamentary majority write in their statement that the Embassy is not really concerned about Georgia's interests, but about its agents in order to retain their chance to return to power. "People Power" claims the Embassy wants to take back the reins of power in Georgia.

See the statement:

"Unfortunately, the US Ambassador has once again demonstrated to us that she does not recognise Georgia as a sovereign state. When you accuse four Georgian judges of corruption without proof, in violation of the presumption of innocence and punish them on the basis of rumours spread by the National Movement-owned media, this is nothing but a manifestation of hostility to the state sovereignty of Georgia. According to the general principles of law, a judge enjoys special immunity and can only be punished on the basis of a sophisticated judicial procedure and irrefutable evidence. Accordingly, the principle of presumption of innocence applies with special intensity to judges. However, the US Ambassador ignores this and without evidence calls the judges corrupt, which is a gross insult to our state. This attitude was further exposed when Mrs Degnan tried to defend David Kezerashvili and stated that until the investigation is completed she cannot say anything about the robbery of European pensioners by Kezerashvili. That is, the presumption of innocence, which for some reason was not applicable to Georgian judges, fully applies to David Kezerashvili, who was not satisfied with robbing Georgian businessmen and the Georgian army, and decided to increase his multi-million dollar assets at the expense of European pensioners. [...] From all this it is clear that by its actions the Embassy is not really looking out for the interests of Georgia, but rather it is looking to their agents in order to preserve the chance for them to return to power and for the Embassy to regain the reins of power.

We must face the truth and admit that the US Ambassador would not dare to do this to a fully established state, and if she did, a fully established state would declare such an ambassador persona non grata. But it is clear that today our state does not yet have the resources to do so."

"People's Power" says that such attitude of the Ambassador is more the result of the problem, and not the cause. According to them, under the "National Movement" the government was staffed with agents.

"This is how we lost our state sovereignty in 2003, which we have been gradually regaining since 2012. This sovereignty is still quite weak and this is the main reason why the Ambassador shows such a rude attitude towards the statehood of Georgia. We will repeat once again that this kind of action of the Ambassador is the result of a problem - still weak sovereignty, and not its cause. Moreover, the goal of the Ambassador's harsh actions is precisely to prevent Georgia from fully regaining its sovereignty, in order to allow the agents to come to power once again. In this struggle, the government should not give up its principles and fully restore the sovereignty of our country. In such conditions, no one will dare to interfere in the functioning of the state institutions of Georgia in the future", - states the People's Power.
