In connection with the non-fulfillment of obligations in the case of the deportees, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe once again strongly criticized Russia and gave a deadline to specify the form of compensation.

According to the decision of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, Russia must pay out direct compensation to Georgia by November 12, 2020, or must agree to the mediation of the Council of Europe.

Otherwise, an interim decision will be adopted at a December 2020 meeting, which is the first step in initiating non-compliance procedures.

The Human Rights Court has sentenced Moscow to pay 10 million euros to Georgian citizens deported from Russia in 2006.

On January 31, 2019, the European Court of Human Rights ordered the payment of compensation to Georgians deported in 2006. According to a Grand Chamber decision, Russia was to pay 10 million euros to Georgian citizens within three months, and was fined for each day exceeded, although the occupying country has not yet complied with that decision.
