The safety of journalists during elections is of crucial importance - Kelly Degnan

Recalling recent violence against journalists, U.S. Ambassador to Georgia Kelly Degnan noted the importance of media safety in the run-up to elections, saying that journalists play a vital role in all democratic countries.

"It is always important to ensure the safety of journalists. Journalists play a vital role in informing the public in all democratic countries. Over the past few weeks, we have often received reports of threats or attacks against Georgian journalists. Responsible journalism is the foundation of democracy; it is essential to the electoral process. The media provide the Georgian people with information about candidates, parties and their views on important issues," the Ambassador said.
