Noncompliance of party leader with set census - Kobakhidze names prerequisite for cancellation of party registration

Published:

If a person who does not meet any of the constitutional requirements for exercising the right to vote participates in the pre-election campaign as the leader of a political party, this circumstance becomes a sufficient reason to cancel the party's registration - the bill was initiated and, as today, December 17 Irakli Kobakhidze, one of the leaders of the Georgian Dream, said at the briefing that it will be approved by the end of next week.

The 2000 GEL fine provided by the current Election Code for anti-constitutional involvement in election agitation is not enough to neutralize the negative impact that this fact may have on the election process.

Accordingly, the initiated draft law aims to correct the gap in the Election Code and to properly implement the constitutional requirement.

"We strongly believe that this bill, along with the implementation of the constitutional requirement, will successfully reduce the degree of polarization in Georgian politics and strengthen healthy opposition political forces," Irakli Kobakhidze said at a briefing.
