The regulatory commission is launching an investigation against "Mtavari Channel" this time because of the story aired on "Mtavari" on Saturday. At issue is a report by journalist Beka Korshia ,which the Bekauri Commission deemed obscene.
The channel's lawyer says that the regulatory commission is already controlling the content of the aired stories, which is nothing more than censorship:
"The regulatory commission is intruding in the content of the story and wants to exercise control over the content, which is nothing but censorship. Soviet censorship was just like that. They will start censoring the story, then will move on to literary works ... This is a gross violation of the rights of a journalist as well as a violation of the rights of a media company. This journalist, Beka Korshia, has a specific form of expression. He uses satirical, ironic, sarcastic language to express his own opinion. He is a journalist of an analytical program and presents his opinions and assessments to the public in a concrete way. This is the form and choice of his expression, which is protected by the European Convention on Human Rights and the Constitution of Georgia," - said Tamta Muradashvili.
The regulatory commission dedicated the last day of the year to penalizing Main Channel and upon Dream's complaint the regulator ruled the TV company a violator.
The opposition believes that there is a political motive behind the regulatory commission's decisions and orders from the Georgian Dream government.
"It is impossible to morally break Nika Gvaramia or "Mtavari" TV, this is an unfulfilled mission, and what is the aim of Kobakhidze's move when they know that Nika Gvaramia can be subjugated is incomprehensible. They are just stubborn in making serious, stupid mistakes," - said Nika Melia, the UNM chairman.
The "Main Channel" for the Georgian Dream is one of the biggest inconveniences and now they have directly moved to the stage of pressure, suffocation, it is an absolutely illegal, unfounded, unjust action and that is what we are protesting and therefore we are not entering the parliament. This is happening because the Georgian Dream has seized all the institutions, law and justice are not for them," - said Elene Khoshtaria.
Let us remind you that the National Communications Regulatory Commission today considered, among other things, the Georgian Dream's complaint against the Main Channel - for refusing to place free political ads for all election subjects and the CEC before the second round of elections. The regulator found Main Channel to be in violation and warned it.
