Georgia's Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia has resigned.
At a briefing, he spoke about Nika Melia, the political and economic problems in the country, and his decision.
This man [Nika Melia] is a person who has never had any particular respect for Georgia's laws. This is the man who called on Georgian citizens to storm the parliament on June 20, said Giorgi Gakharia.
Gakharia said he could not come to a joint agreement with the team
Unfortunately, I could not reach a consensus with my team on this issue. I have decided to resign. I want to believe that this step will help reduce the polarization in the political space of our country. Polarization and contradictions are our biggest risks, - said Giorgi Gakharia.
Now, according to the ex-premier, when there is political tension, polarization in the country and all this is exacerbated by a pandemic, it is unacceptable to take action against a specific person - if it puts under risk people's lives - even if it is legal. Gakharia thinks that "such a measure should be taken only when all kinds of risks will be reinsured and will not create any excuse for escalation."
