According to the Public Defender, Nino Lomjaria, the prosecutor's office could not substantiate the necessity of arresting Nika Melia. She said that the government's actions towards the protesters on June 20 already had the signs of selective justice.
"In a situation when no one has been punished because of June 20, no one has been held responsible for using force against peaceful protesters, very few people have been recognized as victims and the investigation has been suspended for the last year the signs of selective justice are obvious.
Especially when there is such a political crisis in the country, and I believe that the preventive measure against Nika Melia was not properly justified. The prosecutor's office failed to substantiate why it was necessary to imprison the leader of the opposition party today and how Nika Melia could harm the authorities if he was free today. I did not see that in the arguments of the prosecutor's office," said the Public Defender.
Let us remind you that riot policemen burst into the office of the National Movement, broke down the doors and forcefully detained Nika Melia.
