According to Guram Macharashvili, a “Georgian Dream” MP, the authorities will not be able to assess the court decision regarding the chairman of the United National Movement, Nika Melia.
"We can not comment, especially the politicians in power, on what decision the court will make, it will not be right, given that the judiciary is independent," – Said Macharashvili
Majority MP Irakli Kadagishvili says that whether Nika Melia will be released depends on the "United National Movement" or the court. According to him, the ruling team said at the negotiating table that if Melia paid the bail, the government would consider the issue of political amnesty.
The trial of Nika Melia, chairman of the “United National Movement”, is scheduled for Thursday, April 8.
Tbilisi City Court sentenced Nika Melia to imprisonment on February 17 as a measure of restraint. The case was considered by Judge Nino Chakhnashvili. Opposition leaders gathered at the UNM office to defend Nika Melia.
Giorgi Gakharia resigned from the Prime Minister the next morning. He linked the resignation to the case of Nika Melia and said that there was a "difference of opinion" in the team on this issue. After Gakharia's resignation, the Ministry of Internal Affairs postponed Melia's detention "temporarily".
After Irakli Gharibashvili was appointed to replace Gakharia, the government of the "Dream" stormed the UNM office and arrested Nika Melia.
