Today is the congress of "European Georgia", which will elect the new leadership of the party.
According to Davit Bakradze, he refuses both the chairmanship of the party and the membership of the party and explains:
“The congress of the party "European Georgia" will be held today, at which the new leadership of the party will be elected. I want to explain again the reason why I will not attend the congress, I refuse to be a Chairman of the “European Georgia” and be a member of the party.
Despite the gross and blatant falsification of the parliamentary elections of 2020 by the government, the results shown by the European Georgia were far from what was desired-a considerable drop in votes as compared to the previous elections and extremely poor results shown in big cities (primarily in Tbilisi)-are an obvious sign that the party needs fundamental innovations and reforms, including a complete overhaul of the leadership team, the introduction of new faces and interaction with new parties in new political configurations. This is why I decided not to stay on as chairman and thus paved the way for the establishment of new leaders in the party. Gigi Ugulava and a large part of the leadership had a similar position. A different opinion was held by Giga Bokeria, who considered it advisable to stay in the party. I respect Giga's opinion, but I think this position is not in the interests of the party - with the party leaders present today at the congress it will be very difficult to convince voters and potential coalition partners of renewal, new vision and, therefore, better future.
That is why, since there is no principled renewal of the party - in which I was ready to help the party as a regular member after leaving my current, I made a decision, to give up both the chairmanship and a party membership.
Obviously, this is a very difficult human decision - regardless of the political process, "European Georgia" will always remain a team of people dear and valuable to me, with whom we have gone through many hardships and fought with dignity. Once again today I thank everyone - the leaders, employees, regional organizations, and the parliamentary team.
Our common struggle for a better Georgia continues, and with or without a party, I wish everyone success.
As for my political plans, I am not going to join any party at this stage, and after leaving "European Georgia" I will take a party break. But I remain in the political and general opposition struggle, and as a citizen and politician of this country, I will do everything I can to make Georgia a democratic, economically viable, free, united and European state!" - writes David Bakradze.
