It will be known today whether the Tbilisi City Court will leave the chairman of the United National Movement, Nika Melia, in illegal detention. The trial of the leader of the main opposition party is scheduled for 11:00 am. Nika Melia himself will attend the session.
The UNM Chairman's two-month pretrial detention period expires on April 17, so the judge must consider the issue of the restraining order in court.
Earlier on April 8, the trial of the leader of the main opposition party took place. Judge Chakhnashvili satisfied the motion of the defense regarding the attendance of Nika Melia at the trial. For reference, Melia had been expelled from the previous trial, due to which he was not allowed to attend the hearing. The judge did not call a break to bring Melia from the Rustavi prison to the court, so the trial was postponed.
Tbilisi City Court sentenced Nika Melia to imprisonment on February 17 as a measure of restraint. The case was considered by Judge Nino Chakhnashvili. Opposition leaders gathered at the UNM office to defend Nika Melia.
Giorgi Gakharia resigned from the Office of the Prime Minister the next morning. He linked his resignation to Melia's case and said that there was a "difference of opinion" in the team on the issue. After Gakharia's resignation, the Ministry of Internal Affairs postponed Melia's detention "temporarily".
After the appointment of Irakli Gharibashvili as the Prime Minister to replace Gakharia, the government of the "Dream" stormed the UNM office and arrested Nika Melia.
