I believe Russia's goal is to prevent Georgia from becoming a member of NATO and the European Union - Kelly

"What is Russia's goal not only for Georgia, but for the entire post-Soviet space, including Ukraine. I think their goal is to make sure that Georgia does not accept the NATO Membership Action Plan and become a member of NATO and the European Union.
I'm also concerned about the Georgian government's decision when the project in Anaklia was stopped.
I think if you look at who wins from the decision not to build a deep water port on the Black Sea, it's Russia. I was concerned, I think, that this port would increase NATO's ability to communicate with the Georgian Coast Guard, more ships would visit it. It would really provide a western corner of the southern corridor for Caspian Sea energy. "I think stopping the Anaklia port project has really benefited Russia."

Former U.S. Ambassador to Georgia Ian Kelly said this during an online discussion hosted by the Center for Economic Policy Research.
