"Bail for bail is irrelevant" - Prosecutor, before Nika Melia’s trial

Published:

When asked whether bail is possible, Amiran Guluashvili, the prosecutor in Nika Melia's case, said that after February 17, this assessment was irrelevant.
Detention has been applied  used since  February 17, so the bail you mentioned is not valid after February 17 - says Guluashvili.
He made the statement before the trial of Nika Melia, where after the bail paid by the European Union, they should discuss the change of the measure of restraint for Melia.
In addition, the prosecutor did not answer a specific question - whether the state prosecution had a precedent when the bail was first paid and then the court discussed it.
Guluashvili had a general answer to this question saying  that all was fully in line with the Georgian law.

"We have repeatedly stressed that the detention of Nikanor Melia has never been an end in itself for  the Georgian Prosecutor's Office. The fact that he is in custody was caused on the one hand by the fact that there were certain risks towards him and it was necessary to use a measure of restraint to eliminate these risks. As for the specific type of detention, detention, it was practically an inevitable circumstance, given the fact that a lighter measure of restraint - bail - was not fulfilled by him" said Amiran Guluashvili.
