The non-governmental organization Center for Social Justice (formerly EMC) responds to a report on the Mtavari Channel in which a cleric talks about illegal actions by law enforcement, which led to illegal prosecution against him.

"Given the importance of this case and the possible involvement of senior police officials in it, it is first and foremost necessary that it be investigated by the State Inspector's Office, whose main competence is to investigate specific crimes committed by law enforcement. At the same time, the investigation should be done in a clean, effective, trustworthy and quick manner”

The statement said that it has been a significant problem in the country for years. The Center for Social Justice calls for:

Service of the State Inspector

• To apply to the Prosecutor's Office of Georgia with a substantiated proposal - to transfer him to the criminal case belonging to his investigative subordination for investigation;

To the Prosecutor General's Office

• To satisfy the appeal of the State Inspector's Office on the transfer of a criminal case belonging to its investigative subordination for investigation;

Parliament of Georgia

• Begin work to strengthen the Office of the State Inspector. The mandate of the Inspector's Service should be expanded, the Service's legislation should have sufficient guarantees for departmental independence.
• It is essential that in cases of a combination of offenses where at least one case is under the supervision of an inspector, the investigative service should not be at the discretion of the prosecutor and should have pre-emptive jurisdiction over the full criminal case.
