"The Parliament's commitment is to temporarily suspend this process until the reform is successfully considered and implemented," said Kelly Degnan, the US ambassador to Georgia, who said the appointment of Supreme Court justices should be suspended.
Degnan underscores the Charles Michel Agreement document, under which the parties undertook the obligation to conduct judicial reform.
"We were happy when representatives of different parties in Georgia reached an agreement, which also included judicial reform. Now its time to commit to the fulfilling the obligations set out in the document. Until an inclusive and comprehensive reform of the judiciary takes place, the parties to the agreement have promised to implement a broad, ambitious justice reform, but this has not yet been done.
It is important that the debate on reform be a multi-party, inclusive process. We know that the Council of Justice has nominated candidates. It is now up to Parliament to temporarily suspend this process until the reform is successfully discussed and implemented." - Kelly Degnan said.
"Georgian Dream" is not going to stop the process of appointing judges. At the same time, on June 23, Mamuka Khazaradze, the leader of "Lelo", came up with an initiative at the parliamentary session that if the "Georgian Dream" continues the process of appointing judges, the opposition will leave the parliament.
