Every opposition party demanded a 40% threshold – Kobakhidze

Published:

According to Irakli Kobakhidze, Chairman of the Georgian Dream, the imposition of a 40% threshold for majoritarian candidates in the local elections was a demand of the opposition and was opposed by the ruling team.

"The 40% threshold was demanded by all opposition parties. We have said several times that it would not be expedient, but in the end, we agreed to introduce the threshold. This was a repeated request from the opposition," said Irakli Kobakhidze.

In case no candidate can cross this threshold, a second-round is appointed.

Part of the opposition says that the ruling team intends to impose this threshold due to the fall of its own rating and the increase of Gakharia's rating.

40% threshold is supported by "Strategy Builder" and "Girchi" (Khvichia-Megrelishvili)
