Prime Minister Irakli Gharibashvili responded to a statement by Georgia's third president, Mikheil Saakashvili, who called on the European Union to "stop funding the regime."
According to Gharibashvili, Mikheil Saakashvili's statement is enmity against the country and the people:
"How can I make a serious comment on the statement of such a harmful, unserious man. Recall that back when our government was actively working, it was 2014, when we signed the Association Agreement and then actively started working on visa-free travel, in this case it was our work that achieved visa-free travel for citizens, not just visa-free travel for our party members, we were working to achieve visa-free travel for our country.
We got visa-free travel. At that time, purposeful, anti-state work was being done to somehow stop this from happening to our country under our government. What is it called, if not enmity against one's own country and people? The same handwriting continues to this day. These people, because they can no longer speak to their own people, the population, know that they are severely defeated in all elections, so they have resorted to such a harmful policy to somehow create problems for our state and citizens. - Gharibashvili said.
Gharibashvili also responded to the issue of stopping macro-financial assistance, saying that it is a tragedy when opponents talk about sanctions in EU structures.
"The tragedy is that the citizens of our country, including former President Saakashvili, walk into the structures of the European Union and, as you know, he is a member of the European People's Party and has made every effort to impose some sanctions and delays on us," he said.
