The organization Alt-Info was granted the status of National Broadcaster. The decision was recently made by the National Communications Commission. With this decision, Alt-Info broadcasting will no longer be restricted and the population in any region of Georgia will be able to watch their programs.
Zurab Makharadze, the founder of Alt-Info, is one of the organizers of the July 5 violence. Hate speech and threatening statements were broadcast on Alt-Info, leading to July 5.
According to NGO representatives, it was important for the prosecution to investigate the case in a timely and effective manner, as in such a case the responsibility of specific individuals might be established and the Communications Commission would no longer have to make decisions regarding Alt-Info broadcasting.
"It was important for the prosecutor's office to assess these circumstances in a timely manner, to investigate all this in a timely manner, however we have seen that the response of the prosecutor's office and the investigation to violent calls and the organization of violence is zero. Thus, if there were a timely and effective response to this issue, it would have been possible to establish the issue of responsibility of certain persons, after which the Communications Commission would no longer have to resolve this issue," Nika Simonishvili said.
