Imedi Violated The Electoral Code - Communications Commission Satisfies UNM and European Georgia Complaints

Published:

The Communications Commission (GNCC) has upheld the complaints of European Georgia and the United National Movement against Imedi TV and has drawn up two violations by the broadcaster for violating the Election Code of Georgia.

The Communications Commission has found that the content of the advertisements does not contradict the general principles and requirements set out in the Constitution, which are reflected in the relevant legislation.

The TV company did not broadcast the free pre-election advertisement submitted by "European Georgia" due to the repetition of hate speech. Imedi TV notes that the submitted video contains a text containing insults and ridicule, and its content is unethical and unscrupulous, which is inappropriate advertising, the placement of which is prohibited by the Law of Georgia on Broadcasting. As for the free political advertisements submitted by the United National Movement, the TV station said that they would not be able to broadcast a video clip containing signs of crime, illegal actions, incitement and endorsment of crime, as well as provoking unrest and anti-social action.

The Communications Commission was guided by the standard set by the Supreme Court when deciding on the issues at today's session and considered that Imedi TV had violated the Election Code of Georgia in both cases. Accordingly, the Communications Commission upheld the complaints of the political unions and made a decision against Imedi TV to draw up protocols on administrative violations. The protocols of the violation will be sent to the court for consideration. - the statement reads.
