Devastating tragedy in Batumi

Devastating tragedy in Batumi - on October 8 one of the sections of a residential building collapsed on May 26 Street.  As a result of the incident about 15 people were trapped under the rubble.

Soon after the incident, rescuers pulled out from under the rubble a small child who was in a car parked near the building.  As for the people who were directly in the building, according to the latest data, rescuers were able to find 9 of them, 7 of whom were dead.  Among the dead there are 3 minors.

Two of the victims were taken to the clinic, but one of them, a 35-year-old woman, died this morning.  She was admitted to a medical facility in critical condition.  The woman's heart stopped five times during the night.  It turned out that the two deceased children found in the ruins were her children.

The state of health of the other victim was also serious.  According to the doctor, the patient has multiple fractures and long pressure syndrome.

 At the moment, 1 more person is being searched for in the rubble.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the probable cause of the building collapse was unauthorized repair work on the ground floor.  In connection with this, the agency arrested the owner of the apartment and two workers.

Chairman of Adjara government Tornike Rizhvadze stated that geologists and builders will study the buildings around the collapsed building.

October 11 is announced to be a day of mourning in Georgia in connection with the tragedy.
