Mikheil Saakashvili's open letter on the visit of the US Secretary of Defense to Georgia

The third President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili responds to the visit of the Secretary of Defense of the United States of America, Lloyd J. Austin with an open letter.

According to Mikheil Saakashvili's letter, the visit underscores the fact that the United States continues to support Georgia's territorial integrity and sovereignty.

I highly appreciate the visit of US Secretary of Defense, Lloyd J. Austin, to Georgia (and Ukraine), which underlines the fact that “U.S. support for Georgia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty is unwavering”!

With regard to Georgia, I believe the revival of the Shiraki Military Airport in Eastern Georgia bears great and promising potential. Located near the borders with Azerbaijan and Armenia, this base might gain crucial strategic importance and could station up to 3’000 U.S. troops.

Moreover, it is essential to revisit the issue of the Anaklia port (Lazika). The development of this deep-sea port project was promoted by our government — only to be dropped officially in 2020 by the current government of Georgia in order to serve Russian interests in the region. The Anaklia port represents an important element in enforcing U.S. presence in, as well as in increasing the security of our region.
