We demand that the third President of Georgia be transferred to a multidisciplinary hospital - International Association of Georgian Doctors

The International Association of Georgian Doctors responds to the fact of imprisonment and hunger strike of the third President of Georgia — Mikheil Saakashvili and issues a joint statement, which we offer unchanged:

Our goal is to inform the public about the medical risks associated with Mikheil Saakashvili's current condition.

As of today, this is the 27th day of M. Saakashvili's extreme form of protest - hunger strike. According to his personal physician, M. Saakashvili has a history of congenital diseases of the hematopoietic system - thalassemia (moderate) and congenital liver pathology - Hilbert syndrome.

In terms of medical risks, it is important to consider the following:

1. Acid-alkaline imbalance caused by starvation and dysfunction of the cardiovascular system, problems caused by glucose deficiency, neurological changes caused by vitamin B1 deficiency, etc.

2. The development of moderate to severe thalassemia caused by stress into severe thalassemia, which requires specialized hematological management.

3. Hyperbilirubinemia and associated hemolysis due to exacerbation of Gilbert's syndrome (red blood cell breakdown).

This is a short list of possible multi-organ complications that may develop in case of the third president of Georgia.

Multi-organic complications require multiprofile management. Involvement of cardiologists, neuropathologists, hepatologists, endocrinologists, hematologists, intensive care specialists, resuscitators, and access to appropriate laboratory and instrumental examinations is essential in the management process.

There are several multidisciplinary hospitals in Georgia, which are staffed with doctors of different profiles and where high-tech examinations (computed tomography, angiography, magnetic resonance examination, endoscopic examination), invasive radiological interventions and a wide range of laboratory examinations are possible.

According to our information, 585 people were transferred from a penitentiary to a multiprofile civilian hospital last year alone, which means that Mikheil Saakashvili's case will not be a precedent and will not contradict general legal norms.

We emphasize that our statement is devoid of any political conjuncture, it is based on professional, humane and global reputation principles; With this in mind, our request is that the third President of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili, be transferred to a multidisciplinary hospital, where, if necessary, timely and qualified medical care of any profile will be provided, thus protecting his right to live — the statement reads.
