This is not a hospital, this is a prison where there is a medical facility, however it is not equipped enough to provide adequate care to the patient in case of aggravation of the situation - Says Mikheil Saakashvili's American lawyer, who recently left the Gldani prison facility and assessed with journalists the condition of his client, the third president of Georgia, the accusations he has made and a response to the footage of the violence spread by the penitentiary:
First of all, it really is not an appropriate institution for a former president. However, despite everything, he feels quite lively. This facility will not be safe for him, nor will there be adequate medical care in case his condition worsens.
I have seen the allegations and can say that you will not find similar allegations in America. I think what he is accused of would not at all be considered a criminal offense under American law, or under international law. However, currently our primary concern is its health and safety.
I am not an expert in Georgian law, and I am only saying that according to international law they have an obligation to take care of a prisoner. Therefore, from what I have seen in this institution, it is impossible to fulfill this obligation adequately, especially when it comes to the president, and even more importantly, there are prisoners in this institution who were arrested during his rule.
I saw the footage published by the Ministry of Justice and I want to say that it is really disturbing how the former president is treated. However, I repeat that the most important thing is the inadequacy of this institution. This is not a hospital, this is a prison where there is a medical facility, but it is not equipped enough to provide adequate care to the patient in the event of an aggravation of the situation," said John Sandweg.
