We have no obligation to let the Public Defender of Ukraine in the Gldani prison - Bregadze

"We have no obligation to do so" - this is how the Minister of Justice Rati Bregadze answered the question of the journalists why the Public Defender of Ukraine Ludmila Denisova was not allowed to visit Mikheil Saakashvili in the Gldani prison.

Bregadze said that there was "no need" for the Public Defender of Ukraine to enter the prison and accused Ludmila Denisova of making one-sided statements.

"As for the reason for non entry, I emphasize once again that the Georgian legislation does not provide for the entry of the Public Defender of Ukraine and there is no need for that, we have no obligation to do so, therefore, when a prisoner is in a medical facility, we are obliged to do our best to protect his health to the fullest extent, and as I have already told you, the Public Defender has not been admitted for these reasons," the minister said.

He also noted that the agency "refrains as much as possible" from letting people enter the Gldani medical facility who are not allowed to do so by law.

"We also refused other persons who were not allowed to enter the detention facility under Georgian law. The 18th institution is a medical institution and, therefore, we will refrain as much as possible from allowing people who do not have the right under Georgian law to enter the penitentiary institution," - said Rati Bregadze.
