Joint visit and resolution of support - Joint Opposition Statement on Ukraine

The opposition factions in parliament have completed consultations on a resolution in support of Ukraine. According to them, it is important for parliament to be able to initiate the draft and get it with joint support during the next sessional week.

"We are asking for consultations with Georgian Dream in order to have a unified position in support of Ukraine in this situation, so we have concrete measures and concrete initiatives that we can take at the parliamentary level to support Ukraine," Teona Akubardia said.

Apart from the resolution, the opposition has an initiative to hold consultations with the speaker of the parliament and the foreign affairs committee in the nearest future. According to Khatia Dakanoidze, the defence and foreign affairs minister should go to the foreign affairs committee to discuss current developments in Ukraine.

"We need to make a joint visit to Kiev in the nearest future on behalf of the majority and the Georgian parliamentary opposition, which will be an important emphasis on the fact that the Parliament of Georgia supports a very important neighbour and strategic partner of our country. ", - said Dekanoidze.

According to MP Salome Samadashvili, the opposition believes that the text of the two resolutions - on supporting Ukraine and Georgia's NATO membership should be agreed upon in the coming days. She said it must be clear to everyone that our choice regarding NATO membership will not be reconsidered.

"We appeal to the Prime Minister of Georgia, it is illogical that a Security Council meeting has not be convened yet, when unprecedented security challenges have been created in the Black Sea region, which directly affects our country.

We call on the Prime Minister to convene an enlarged meeting of the relevant council this week, to invite representatives of the opposition, including council members, because we have one state, one country," Samadashvili said.
