"This could be a real chance for Georgia" - opposition urges authorities to cooperate with trilateral alliance

The document has been signed - Ukraine, the UK and Poland have officially launched trilateral cooperation in security, economy, trade and energy.

The document says Britain and Poland will help the Ukrainian people defend the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders.

Opposition groups have called on the Georgian government to cooperate with the alliance. They say the government should have already started consultations on joining the alliance, because strategically it will be one of the most important formats.

"I call on the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry to openly state publicly if there are any consultations, if not why and what the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia considers as an obstacle. Perhaps this is a real chance and opportunity for Georgia to become a member of the Alliance," said Khatia Dekanoidze, a member of the UNM.

Opponents say the government's passivity confirms that Dream does not want to defend the country's strategic interests and continues its policy of appeasment.

"It is very important that we strengthen our defense capabilities in the format of alternative alliances or unions in the field of defense and security. This is what the trilateral alliance has been formed for, which is likely to expand, will serve to create some sort of security bridge. I think Ivanishvili has very firm position that Georgia must keep silent until it is clear how this geopolitical confrontation will end," said Salome Samadashvili, member of parliamentary faction Lelo for Georgia.

As for the position of the ruling team, member of the "Dream" Guram Macharashvili says the decision on any format will be "based on state interests".

Any format that has been or will be, will naturally be discussed in our country first of all based on what is in the best interest for our country. Then, based on consultations of our international partners, there will be this support that Ukraine needs," Macharashvili said.
