Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addresses the population of Russia in connection with the attack on the nuclear power plant in the Zaporozhye region.
He says it is unacceptable to forget about the Chernobyl disaster and that an attack on nuclear power plants would also damage Russia.
Zelensky urges Russians to protest against their government's actions.
"We experienced a night that could have stopped the history of our people, Ukraine and Europe. The Russian military attacked the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant. Europe's largest nuclear power plant. It is six times the size of Chernobyl. The Russian tank crews knew exactly what they were shooting at. It is an incredible horror. There are 15 nuclear units in Ukraine. The Russian military has a completely impaired memory, and you do not remember the Chernobyl tragedy.
Russians, I want to ask you, how can we not remember Chernobyl, didn't we fight together with the consequences of its explosion?! You should remember well the corpses and infrastructure scattered by the explosion! You should remember well the radiation at the time of the explosion and the evacuation of people! How can you forget that, and if you remember, don't keep quiet. Take to the streets and tell your government that you want to live without radiation. Radiation doesn't know where Russia is. It also does not recognize the borders of your country," Vladimir Zelensky told the Russian people.
He also said that in the current situation, Ukraine's skies should be closed immediately.
"All night long, I have been talking to world leaders and partners. They are in shock. The UN Security Council is convening an emergency meeting in connection with the attack on the nuclear power plant. New sanctions must be immediately imposed on the nuclear terrorist country. Ukraine's skies must be closed immediately. Only this can guarantee that Russia will not launch a missile attack on the nuclear power plant," Zelensky said.
He also thanked the military who guarded the nuclear power plant and the firefighters who managed to put out the fire.
"I am grateful to all the soldiers and heroes who defended the plant and tried to stop the enemy, to the people who put out the fire in the building. The residents of Energodar are well aware of this danger and a lot depends on them.
Kick out the occupiers. To show that Ukraine is not a country of nuclear ashes. Dear Ukrainians, the enemy has brought most of its army into our country," said Volodymyr Zelensky.
