I am concerned that Giorgi Rurua has not yet been freed - a letter from Halicki to Shotadze

Published:

The March 8 agreement has not yet been fully implemented, as political prisoner Giorgi Rurua is still in prison, MEP Andrzej Halitzki sent an official letter to Georgian Prosecutor General Irakli Shotadze.

In a letter posted on Twitter by the MEP, we read:

As a committed friend of Georgia in the European Parliament, I welcomed the signature of the March 8 agreement between the Government of Georgia and the country's opposition reached with mediation of Ambassadors of the European Union, the United States, Germany, and the Council of Europe. Achieving the agreement was an important and obvious opportunity for political leaders to reduce unhealthy polarization in society.

I remain concerned, however, that despite the steps taken towards its implementation, Giorgi Rurua whose release was part of the agreement remains in custody. There is no doubt that full compliance with the March 8 agreement will help Georgia move forward towards less polarized and more civilized campaign and elections, - writes Andrzej Halicki.
