Unity is our only solution! "This unity starts with the President, because the President is the guarantor of unity," Salome Zurabishvili said in her speech before the Parliament, responding to the critics who did not like her appearance on Rustaveli Avenue:
It's absurd, when you accuse the President of dividing the society, when she appeared at Rustaveli because she represented the whole Georgia, not to mention those who didn't come because of political posters and those who simply could not come. At the same time the President introduced herself as the host of the President of a friendly country on Rustaveli Avenue, as Georgian traditions demand! This is not division, this is the first expression of national consensus! Those who do not understand this do not even understand the voice of the nation! Politicians or not, the public understood it all perfectly well.
And it is high time everyone understood that the president does not belong to one political force and will not belong to another. She is only fulfilling her promise made at the inauguration: I take the powers given to me by the constitution to be the president of all, the president of all citizens of Georgia.
The institution of President is not just respected, it is necessary to cooperate with it, especially in this difficult period. The war in Ukraine, new approaches of the EU, Georgia's place in the light of these changes, threats and readiness... These are topics that must and must be discussed in any country not only within the government, but between the government and the President, the majority of the Parliament and various "opposition" groups" - stated Salome Zurabishvili.
The President spoke about the convening of the extraordinary session and the Security Council meetings, which are not held. Zurabishvili says that none of her demands have been met.
Salome Zurabishvili also spoke about the restrictions on her foreign visits:
Two weeks ago I signed a special session of Parliament to discuss Ukraine. That is why I requested an enlarged Security Council meeting. I asked the parliament to schedule my speech for 5 March, as soon as I returned from Europe. None of the appeals have been passed, no extraordinary meeting or enlarged Security Council has been scheduled and, finally, the date required for the annual address has not been respected.
The restrictions imposed on the President's international activities are incomprehensible at this time, when the need is greatest and time is short. On 26 February 2022, I gave up working visits to Paris, Brussels, Berlin and Warsaw in writing. Given the current situation, I have cancelled all official formats. At such times, I considered it necessary to use my personal connections and turn working visits into face-to-face meetings. I think that such an approach and such restrictions are detrimental to our country which is in such a difficult region. It is not the time for restrictions, on the contrary, whom we can, internationally, we must be involved as much as possible, we must not give our partners any peace! I even think that my forty years of experience in diplomacy and strategic affairs, as well as the personal contacts acquired during this period will benefit this country rather than hinder it," Zurabishvili said.
