We call on the Georgian authorities to fully implement the March 8 agreement and release Giorgi Rurua, - Donald Tusk, President of the European People's Party, wrote on his Twitter page.
EPP welcomed the March 8 Agreement between Georgia’s Government and opposition as a key step to reduce tensions. We remain concerned that Giorgi Rurua is still in prison. We call for full implementation of the Agreement and Rurua’s release,”-wrtites Tusk
Recall that the dialogue between the government and the opposition, mediated by the ambassadors, ended on March 8 by agreement. According to the facilitators of the process, the negotiations consist of two parts - one devoted to the electoral system and the other to the solution of such issues as political interference in the judicial system.
The release of political prisoners is one of the most important parts of the March 8 agreement, which the Georgian Dream has not yet fully fulfilled. President Salome Zurabishvili pardoned Gigi Ugulava and Irakli Okruashvili on May 15, while Giorgi Rurua remains in custody.
Giorgi Rurua, one of the founders and shareholders of the Mtavari Channel, who was involved in the ongoing protests on Rustaveli Avenue in 2019, was arrested on November 18 on charges of illegal possession and carrying of firearms.
