The US Ambassador to Georgia, Kelly Degnan, says it is now important that countries take a united stand against Russian aggression.
As the ambassador noted, no one is asking the Georgian government to impose bilateral sanctions, but he said that any country that does not comply with international sanctions will be held accountable.
"It is important now that we speak with one voice against Russian aggression, which has claimed the lives of thousands of Ukrainian civilians and destroyed Ukrainian cities.
The sanctions are aimed at influencing Russia's actions. I want to clarify that no one is asking the government of Georgia to impose bilateral sanctions if they don't want to and if they have decided so.The Georgian government can decide whether or not to impose bilateral sanctions, but all countries that oppose Russian aggression, be it my country or any other country, are expected to submit to the international sanctions regime," Degnan said.
She also said that Georgia has always been a good partner in enforcing international sanctions.
"Georgia complies with international sanctions. Many sanctions may not affect Georgia directly. It is critical to keep that in mind and understand that Georgia, like many other countries, applies sanctions as best it can. We all know that any country that does not comply with international sanctions will be held responsible," says Degnan.
The ambassador notes, however, that the most essential thing is to express solidarity with Ukraine, one way of doing this is by imposing sanctions.
