"If it were not for this selfless struggle of Ukraine, perhaps this day would not have come so fast"| Salome Zurabishvili on the delivery of the EU questionnaire

"If it were not for this selfless fight of Ukraine, this day probably would not have come so quickly," President Salome Zurabishvili said in a special briefing, responding to the EU's self-assessment of Georgia's candidacy status.

She says that now "the population, the political parties, everyone has to come together" because, he says, it's "national consensus and the national interest."

"We received a questionnaire from the EU that we haven't expected for several years. This is an extraordinary new opportunity for our country. For this we have all the EU and EU member states to thank, and even more so Ukraine and their fight. If it were not for this selfless struggle of Ukraine, perhaps this day would not have come so quickly, and when it would have come, on this day, no one could have said...

Because of this tragic situation, the European Union decided to speed up this process and make it more political than bureaucratic...

Today we see that Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia received this questionnaire. It is not just a questionnaire for "yes" and "no" answers. It is a big responsibility for our country. We are responsible for the next generation. Either we will be able to cope with this task or we will not, and that depends entirely on us.

This is a problem that cannot be solved by the decisions and efforts of any one group. This is a national cause, a national interest, and I don't think we wouldn't rally around this great national cause that our ancestors dreamed of since first independence. It would be the people of Georgia or the entire political spectrum, regardless of who did what. Our future is really at stake here, and let's decide how we want it in this short period of time. This questionnaire is about Georgia - what are the problems and what are the achievements.

... This is actually the result of these 31 years, it is because of them we have come to this day. We have no right not to approach this day with complete unanimity. Those who are not united around this are not united around Georgia. I want to call on everybody, the population, the political parties, we all have to unite. This is national consensus and national interest. We should unite around this goal and I am confident that we can do this," says Salome Zurabishvili.
