Merab Turava has been elected as the new President of the Constitutional Court

Merab Turava has been elected as the new President of the Constitutional Court. He was supported by five judges. Turava's rival Irina Imerlishvili received four votes.

Today the plenary session of the Constitutional Court had to elect one of the two candidates for the position of the President of the Constitutional Court. In order to win, the candidate had to be supported by at least five judges out of nine plenum judges.

We would like to remind you that the post of the Chairman of the Constitutional Court has been vacant since June 15, after Zaza Tavadze's term of office expired. The Constitutional Court of Georgia elects the Chairman from among its members for the term of 5 years. It is unacceptable to re-elect one and the same person for that position. At least 3 members of the Constitutional Court shall have the right to nominate a candidate for the office of the Chairperson of the Constitutional Court.
