Government refused to let the president travel to Ukraine - Zurabishvili's special statement from Brussels

Published:

A scandalous and unexpected statement of the Georgian president from Brussels. Salome Zurabishvili was denied visits to France, Poland and Ukraine by the government.

"I am in Brussels, where I arrived on an official visit after Italy, to spare no effort with the EU leadership to support our candidacy. Unfortunately, such a ruling was passed and, even more unfortunate, this ruling was followed by such comments from the government team that virtually prevent me from effectively defending our candidacy today.

I wanted to go to France, Poland, and possibly Ukraine, who we are standing with on this issue and to whom we should be grateful, there would be no expedited nomination process today, but I received another rejection for this trip and myself, because I was told that the government already had done everything to support our candidacy and no longer needed additional activity, I myself felt that it was probably not appropriate, this is not a case where I alone can salvage the situation from all the inaction of the government.

I believe I have a responsibility to the Constitution because Article 78 of the Constitution obligates me to do everything I can to advance this process, I don't believe in any other future of Georgia other than the European future, I don't believe anyone should be priority over this process - neither Saakashvili, nor Gvaramia, nor Bidzina Ivanishvili. Nothing is worth more than to protect the future of our children, for this I will go back to Georgia and protect this future. - Salome Zurabishvili said.
