Speaking at the Qatar Economic Forum, the Prime Minister, Irakli Gharibashvili, reiterated that Ukraine is being granted EU candidate status because it is at war. Gharibashvili says it is a bonus.
According to him, the decision of the European Commission, which recommended the granting of status to Ukraine and Moldova, and first called on Georgia to meet certain conditions - is unfair.
"It is unfair, but we understand, and we have heard from European leaders that they have decided to grant status to Ukraine because Ukraine is at war, Moldova is a very close neighbor and it is in a very difficult situation, it has economic, security issues. If we look at it deservedly, of course, Georgia would be the first country to be granted this status, why? Because we have very concrete results, our country is doing very concrete work but all three nations have a European perspective, this is a historic decision of the EU "This means that the country will become an EU member state and, naturally, it will be granted status under certain conditions," Gharibashvili said.
Gharibashvili said that the conditions were defined by all three states. Gharibashvili did not answer the clarifying question - does he think that the European Union treated Georgia unfairly:
"As I said, we have heard the official position of European leaders, for example, President Macron publicly said a few days ago that the EU decided to grant status to Ukraine because it is at war, it is an incentive, it is a bonus for Ukraine."
For reference, the final decision on all three countries will be made by the European Council on June 24.
