Address of the fourth President of the Council of Europe - Giorgi Margvelashvili handed over a letter to the EU Ambassador, asking him to grant Georgia the status of a candidate for the leaders of the 27 EU member states.
The message compiled by Margvelashvili is signed by all senior officials acting until 2016. Among them are the third president Mikheil Saakashvili and former parliament speakers: Akaki Asatiani, Nino Burjanadze, Davit Bakradze and Davit Usupashvili.
As the fourth president noted, before the European Council announces the decision to grant candidate status to Georgia, the release of Mikheil Saakashvili abroad by the authorities and the release of Nika Gvaramia will be an important argument.
"I saw three opportunities in this direction. The first was to express the public position and it was expressed in a superior way yesterday. The second was to express the unity of the political class, the highest officials, and it was expressed until 2016. The third, in my opinion, is the release of political prisoners. .
There are 3 more days until the 24th, if Saakashvili is released for treatment and Gvaramia is pardoned, in my opinion, this will be a serious argument. I do not know if Gvaramia's imprisonment is more important or Georgia's European perspective," said Giorgi Margvelashvili.
Incumbent President Salome Zurabishvili and the recently elected members of parliament of the Georgian Dream do not join the appeal. According to Margvelashvili, he received the following explanation from Zurabishvili's administration:
"Someone from the presidents office sent me the position that the president has already sent such a letter. However, I want to emphasize that this is a historic letter, which we all signed together. The future of Georgia and its historical perspective are more important than the fate of us all," said the fourth president.
