Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili at a briefing at the Government Administration spoke about the recommendations of the European Commission, in case of their approval the country will have the opportunity to gain EU candidate status.
Garibashvili called ending polarization the main condition set by the commission and said that without the opposition, the government would not be able to do so.
"Our task now should be to continue to build, develop, maintain peace and achieve all the goals in the shortest possible time. Our government is ready for that. As you well know, there is one direct indication in the conditions listed that our political forces must be able to end polarization. I would like to reiterate on behalf of my team that we are always ready for a constructive dialogue, and the door for it has never been closed. I want to make it clear that we are ready, we have always been, and we will always have to work together on issues related to the country's future, on national interests, to have real debates, discussions, and reasoning. This, of course, must take place in a calm, healthy environment.
This is our desire, and I hope that our opponents will assume this responsibility and share it. One of the main, first conditions for ending polarizations is both their duty and their responsibility. The ruling party and the government alone will not be able to realize it unless real steps are taken on their part. I want to reiterate optimistically that I believe they will put their own ambitions, desires, personal goals below the interests of the country. The main thing for us is, first of all, our state, our future, and then our party and personal interests," said Garibashvili.
For reference, the Council of Europe has granted Ukraine and Moldova the status of candidates for EU membership. As for Georgia, the Council recognized the European prospect of the country and issued recommendations, in case of fulfillment of which it will be possible to obtain candidate status by the end of the year.
