Former members of the High Council of Justice issued a statement and expressed their support for the judge in Nika Gvaramia's case, Lasha Chkhikvadze. The statement notes that the actions of the U.S. Embassy are a clear example of interference in the independence of a particular judge, as well as a clear example of "indirect" pressure on judges.
According to Zaza Kharebava, Shota Kadagidze and Levan Gzirishvili it does not matter who is trying to interfere in the activities of the court and according to this, the appearance of any favors or restraint "ruins the idea of independence of the court".
The statement notes that this fact is a gross violation of the Georgian Constitution and the Vienna Convention.
Previous letters state that the U.S. ambassador periodically visits certain courts, meets and speaks with judges without communicating with the Board of Justice, the chairman or the secretary, "thereby clearly undermining and failing to recognize the role of the administration and leadership of the judiciary ."
They also say that the selection of trainers at lecture-seminars organized by the embassy in Georgia shows a lopsided attitude that has some signs of favoritism.
