We heard a kind of ping-pong with the MEPs, there are things that should not be said, such as accusations that the EU is waiting for us to have a second front, - said Salome Zurabishvili at a joint briefing with the head of delegation David McAllister at the presidential palace after the meeting with the MEPs.
The Georgian president criticized the Georgian government in the presence of MEPs for making anti-European statements and said the country should immediately begin work on implementing the 12 recommendations of the European Commission:
"The European perspective given to us by the European Parliament as well as the European Council is very important. Sometimes we forget about it and do not see that it is a step from which there must be no return, but which requires us to be worthy of this European perspective." - Salome Zurabishvili said.
According to the President, it is most important to start work on the implementation of the 12 points outlined by the European Commission. Zurabishvili said that this work must begin with the authorities' visit to Brussels. The President stressed the responsibility of the government in this process, but she also gave an equal role to the opposition:
"The work has to begin. This work must start first in Brussels, where I am waiting for government officials to go to clarify some details with the Commission on how to implement some of these points. It must start in parliament and for that I signed an announcement on appointing a summer session, because when we have 6 months, it is absolutely incomprehensible to me and to our European Parliamentary friends that we are not starting work now.
Working together means in parliament, in the form of a session, in committees or in plenary session, and in working groups put forward by the government, by majority vote. Everybody has to work everywhere. Saying yes to one thing and no to another doesnt work. If we really want something that's actually supported by 85% of our society,
Just working, working together, figuring out where we agree and disagree with each other, it doesn't happen in seperation. First of all it is the responsibility of the majority, because the main levers belong to them, whether they are in Parliament or in the government, they have the power to get this candidacy and this requires a constructive opposition, which will not oppose to everything, but the main responsibility, and the population knows it very well, lies with the government," - says Zurabishvili.
Salome Zurabishvili also reacted to anti-European statements of the main members of government:
"We heard some ping pong with the MEPs. I also said that sometimes it would be better if there were no replies, and urged them to transform this dialogue into slightly different forms, but I will address the government, there are some things that cannot be said, there are some accusations, for example that as if the EU is waiting for a second front and war, this is unacceptable, in these conditions we cannot start any form of dialogue with people who come here to show us that they support this difficult process, which will lead us to a candidate status" - Salome Zurabishvili said.
