"It was not as important for Bidzina Ivanishvili to integrate Georgia into European structures as it was to keep his own power as long as possible," European parliamentarian Rasa Juknevičienė.
The MP also says that the main responsibility for Georgia's European integration lies with the Georgian Dream. However, according to her, it is necessary to unite the opposition parties and consult with the authorities.
"The Georgian Dream must not think that it will be a formal monitoring. We have sent very clear signals to the government of Georgia. It is very important for all the parties, both opposition and government, to gain the status of a candidate as soon as possible.
We have broken the silence, which is a major breakthrough, and the European Union started discussing further expansion. This is a historically important moment. But, of course, the main responsibility lies with the Georgian Dream.
Everything must be done from all sides, including the involvement of civil society. Non-governmental organizations must become intermediaries between the authorities and the opposition. There is a very strong polarization, and we also mentioned this in the resolution. There is too much polarization, which is not conducive to overcoming existing obstacles and achieving cherished results.
Sometimes the opposition has to play a more important role. We think that opposition parties should unite, as it was in Slovakia, and fight together. A similar case happened recently in Moldova," Juknevičienė said.
