Representatives of the parliamentary opposition issued a joint statement and said they would disassociate themselves from the Georgian Dream government's "smear and disinformation campaign" against the United States and the European Union.
The statement noted that such actions of the ruling political force aim to prevent Georgia's integration into the European Union and NATO.
The MPs call on the Georgian Dream to immediately stop the smear and disinformation campaign against Georgia's strategic partners.
We, the representatives of the Georgian parliamentary opposition recognize the great merit of the United States of America and the European Union in maintaining Georgia's statehood from the restoration of independence on April 9, 1991 until today, their great help in the development of our country and the aspiration of our people to become a full-fledged representative of Western civilization;
Echoing the strongly expressed will of the Georgian people to ensure the full integration of Georgia into the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, which was reflected in the Constitution of Georgia;
We condemn the slanderous and disinformation campaign of the Georgian Dream Government against the main strategic partners of Georgia - the United States of America and the European Union.
This was especially clearly highlighted in the slanderous attacks by the highest political officials of the Georgian Dream party and authorities, as well as members of the Georgian Parliament and local self-government bodies, who formally left the Georgian Dream but actually remain an organic part of this political force, against the ambassadors of the United States and the European Union in Georgia - as if they are trying to drag Georgia into the war against Russia, and since they failed to achieve this goal, as if they did not contribute to granting Georgia the status of a candidate country for European Union membership.
It is particularly alarming that certain representatives of the judicial corps are also involved in this political campaign of the Georgian Dream.
Bidzina Ivanishvili's letter published on July 27, 2022, in which he confirmed a meeting on March 21, 2022 on the initiative of the US Ambassador, Ms. Kelly Degnan, but did not say anything about the content of the conversation, covertly reinforced the above-mentioned message of the Georgian Dream - as if the West wants to drag Georgia into the war. This indicates Bidzina Ivanishvili's connection with this anti-state campaign of the Georgian Dream.
Such action by the ruling political power serves the purpose of hindering Georgia's integration into the European Union and NATO, while ensuring such integration, according to article 78 of the Georgian Constitution, is the duty of the constitutional authorities of Georgia, i.e. it represents the commitment of the Georgian Dream government.
Such actions of the ruling government are contrary to the national and state interests of Georgia. It is aimed at separating Georgia from its Western allies and partners and leaving it alone in the face of an occupying State, which is only in the interests of this occupying State - the Russian Federation.
Despite numerous public statements by the above mentioned ambassadors that the U.S. and the European Union do not want and never wanted for Georgia to get involved in the war and that such statements are not true, the Georgian Dream is stubbornly spreading lies.
We call on the Georgian Dream to immediately stop the above-mentioned slander and disinformation campaign against Georgia's strategic partners, the United States and the European Union.
We express full support to the US Ambassador to Georgia, Ms. Kelly Degnan, and the former EU Ambassador, Mr. Carl Hartzell. We appreciate the hard work and efforts made by them to help Georgia on the path of Western integration", reads the statement.
